Proof #10: Watch the Offering Plate
December 14, 2007
This is the most ridiculous proof yet.
The entire premise is that ministers should pray to Jesus to provide all of their financial resources rather than depend on church-goers to donate. He cites all of the usual verses in the Bible about prayer. Again, I’ve said all I need to about prayer and its limitations here.
Now this is another example of shirking responsibilities clearly outlined in the Bible.
When Abraham met Melchizedek, after Melchizedek said a blessing, Abraham gave him a tenth of everything that he had (Gen 14:20b). This is a picture of what was to come: sharing bread and wine, then praying together.
Paying a tithe (a tenth of everything) is seen as a holy sacrifice to God (Lev 27:30, 32), and is meant to be used by ministers for the work they do, since they don’t earn a real-world salary (Num 18:21-24).
We are God’s agents in the world, in this age of grace, obeying the Law by choice and not by compulsion. Our tithes take care of our ministers and their families, and they help to fund other ministries associated with our church. God is taking care of the ministers through our tithes and offerings.
Brain, of course, doesn’t see it that way.

Actually I think another point is that ministers also have an alternate reason to spread the word.
These are all rationalizations to Jake’s arguements aren’t they?
