Proof 46: Ponder Pascal’s Wager

Pascal’s Wager reduces the odds of God’s existence to 1:2, and asks the unbeliever, “With the odds even, isn’t it better to live a life devoted to God?” The life devoted to God betters oneself and lives at peace with the rest of the world.  The life devoted to God is truly free–free of corruption and sin.  When you die, if God exists, then you win everything.  If God doesn’t exist, then you live an exemplary life and lose nothing.

On the other hand, if you live a selfish life, you gain nothing by living that life when you die.  If God exists, then you will be punished for an eternity in hell.  The unbeliever has everything to lose, while the believer loses nothing.  It is much better to believe in God and live the requisite lifestyle.

Marshal Brain’s refutation of Pascal’s Wager is known as the many gods argument.  It would be valid if all religious claims had equal validity. They do not. There is vastly more evidence for the Christian God than for any other deity that humans supposedly “imagined.”

Brain asserts, “Non-believers, in contrast, live moral and loving lives without having to resort to delusion. Non-believers are normal human beings who embrace reality rather than delusion.”  So far, I agree.  Nonbelievers can live moral and upstanding lives without religion.  Brain continues, “As a result, they live much healthier lives.” Here we disagree. Research shows that believers live healthier than do nonbelievers. Atheism leads to higher rates of suicide and depression.

Brain then goes on:

The fact that there are so many gods proves that all of these gods are imaginary. If there actually were an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving “god” in any form, he would be obvious to everyone and we would all align on him. His existence would be undeniable and impossible to hide.

The apostle Paul disagrees with this assertion. In fact, he says the evidence that there is a God is so overwhelming that it leaves men “without excuse” to believe (Rom 1:20). As for God’s behavior, if Brain believes that this is the best way for God to act, then the burden of proof is on him to show why an omnicient, omnipotent being would behave any other way than He already is.

The apostle Paul disagrees with this assertion. In fact, he says the evidence that there is a God is so overwhelming that it leaves men “without excuse” to believe.
–Primitive mind-set at it’s best. Who cares what Paul disagrees with. I disagree with Paul because the evidence against God and the Bible is so overwhelming. The only “evidence” anyone comes up with is the “Whatever we cannot easily understand we say God did it” syndrome. If the ignorance of nature gave birth to the gods, then knowledge of nature is calculated to destroy them.

Research shows that believers live healthier than do nonbelievers.
–This is utterly ridiculous and coincidence. Is God in your body fighting off diseases, infections, aging, and other numerous health problems? Do people of other religions not live healthier because they worship the wrong God? Believers have just as many health problems as non-believers. What does belief in ANYTHING have to do with health anyway? Numerous things go into healthier lives like caring about your body, eating healthy, good genes and exercise. NOT Gods, religions, or beliefs. My guess is that this supposed “research” was done by biased Christians who perverted the research in some way. Do more studies on this subject, and you’ll indeed get the results that it’s all just coincidence.

Atheism leads to higher rates of suicide and depression.
–And Christianity along with other religions has led to mass Genocides and murders in the name of their Gods. Examples being the Crusades and extremist terrorists. Consider these quotes on the subject.
-Religion is not only the opium of the masses, it’s the cyanide.
-Of all the tyrannies that afflict mankind, tyranny in religion is the worst.
-Men never commit evil so fully and joyfully as when they do it for religious convictions.
-The most heinous crimes have been committed under the cover of religion or equally noble motives.
-For much of history, religion may have been a necessary evil, but why has it been more evil than necessary?
-It is usually when men are at their most religious that they behave with the least sense and greatest cruelty.
-The greatest miseries that have afflicted the human race have had their origin in this thing called religion.
-Isn’t killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity?
-Religion is regarded by the common man as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.

The unbeliever has everything to lose, while the believer loses nothing. It is much better to believe in God and live the requisite lifestyle.
–Pascal’s wager is nothing more than a “better play it safe” argument. The believer lives a life of Fear, regret and guilt if he sins by breaking any of the most ridiculous “laws” of God. It is ultimately a life delusional superstitious beliefs. If the nonbeliever has everything to lose, that includes that life of fear and regret which in turn leads to emotional freedom from the burdens of religion.
And thanks to the childish superstition that is religion, everyone in their life hears about this imaginary place called hell, which is the originator of fear and is the main reason people turn to the belief in God.
